The IATBR Lifetime Achievement Award
The Lifetime Achievement Award was unanimously approved by the IATBR Board on May 21, 2003.
Guidelines: The individual selected to receive this award should:
1. have made fundamental and sustained contributions to travel behaviour research for a substantial period (typically at least 25 years) up to the present time
2. be widely known, at the very least among the IATBR community, and
3. have influenced the field through her/his writings, teaching, service, and nurturing of younger professionals.
Individuals known to be at or near retirement from full-time professional service will generally be given priority in consideration for the award.
Award Frequency: The award will be made every three years, to be presented at the International Triennial Meeting. In general, only one winner is expected; however, there are now precedents where two individuals received it in the same year. Such occasions are expected to become rare as the award “ages”.
Award Recognition: The winner(s) will receive a plaque appropriate to the occasion and a symbolic monetary award of $1000. In addition, the conference organizers will cover the registration fees and accommodation costs for the IATBR International Meeting at which the award is to be presented. The winner(s) will also receive Lifetime IATBR membership which entitles him/her with all the privileges that fee-paying members enjoy, including voting rights, for the rest of their life.
Procedure: Selection of the award recipient(s) is the responsibility of a Committee (or Award jury) with revolving overlapping membership, as described in the section below titled "The IATBR Lifetime Achievement Award Process."

The IATBR Lifetime Achievement Award Process
Approved by the IATBR Board, February 10, 2015 (updated November 2019)
- The Secretary/Treasurer distributes the Call for Nominations by email to the membership, with reminders.
- Nominations must be sent to Lifetime Achievement Award Jury Chair.
- Nominator must be an IATBR member; nominees should have been IATBR members during their career.
- The nominator must provide a nomination letter explaining why the nominee is worthy of this particular award, and include a current resume of the nominee.
- Self-nominations are not accepted.
- All nominations must remain absolutely confidential and jury members are sworn to secrecy. All nominations and deliberations of the jury shall be privileged information, and the list of nominees must not be made public. Even the nominee must not be made aware of his/her nomination.
- The main criteria for nominees are that they should:
- have made fundamental and sustained contributions to travel behaviour research for a substantial period (typically at least 25 years) up to the present time;
- be widely known, at the very least among the IATBR community; and
- have influenced the field through her/his writings, teaching, service, and nurturing of younger professionals.
- The Award jury consists of three Core Group members, appointed from among IATBR members by the Chair of IATBR , plus exactly two Ad-Hoc members who serve for only one cycle, recruited from among IATBR members by the Jury Chair in consultation with the Core Group.
- The three Core Group members serve a 3-cycle (9-year) term each. When the Chair of the Jury rotates off, the Core Group member in position 2 becomes Chair and the Core Group member in position 3 rises to position 2. The Chair of IATBR then identifies a new Core Group member to serve in position 3, and the process continues from one three-year cycle to the next. Information on the constitution of past juries is available below.
- In general, only one winner is expected; however, there are now precedents where two individuals received it in the same year. Such occasions are expected to become rare as the award “ages”.
- The Jury Chair communicates the jury’s recommendation to the board at least 60 days prior to the event where the award will be made. The recommendation should include a summary (of about a page) containing the core arguments supporting the recommendation.
- The IATBR Board will consider ratifying the recommendation communicated by the Jury Chair; the Board will work with the Jury to resolve any issues, concerns, or conflicts, and agree upon a final winner. In the event that a resolution with support from both the jury and the Board cannot be reached, the Board will make a decision, possibly after additional consultations; the decision of the Board will be deemed final. The final decision must be based on a majority of votes of the board members. If a majority of board members do not agree on a particular winner, the award to that person is not made. This may mean that no award is made in that round.
- Awardee is notified at least 45 days prior to conference (at least 60 days' notice is recommended) so that he/she can make travel arrangements.
- The IATBR Chair (not the Jury Chair) notifies the winner privately.
- The Jury Chair makes the announcement and the award at the conference banquet dinner.
- Each Winner receives a $1000 check + engraved plaque.
- In addition, the organizers will cover the registration and accommodation costs associated with attending the IATBR conference where the award will be conferred. The winner is expected to make his/her own travel arrangements
- Further, the award recipients will receive Lifetime IATBR membership which entitles them with all the privileges that fee-paying members enjoy, including voting rights, for the rest of their life.
